Hey Discoverers!
Let’s conquer yet another Czech peak! The Central Bohemian Uplands is a group of extinct volcanoes in the the north-western Czech Republic and the highest of them is called Milešovka.
In the 19th century, the German explorer and geographer Alexander von Humboldt used to come here to enjoy the view. He thought it was the third most beautiful panorama in the world and he was a hell of a traveler!
Since there is no cable car, Milešovka is not as busy as many other Czech mountains. Only true hikers and nature lovers make it to the summit!
But not to worry, we are in the Czech Republic, so there is definitely a pub at the top! You will be able to refresh yourself with beer or soda and Czech pub classics like cabbage soup, sausages and pickled cheese. There is also a meteorological station that doubles as a viewing tower and a museum (admission is included).
Bohemian Uplands is the region of castles, so no trip to the area is complete without visiting at least one castle ruins. For us, it will be the ruins of the Oparno Castle, nested on a rock overlooking a picturesque valley of the same name.
We’re meeting on Sunday April 28th at 8:30 AM at the Prague Main Train Station (at our usual place in front of the ticket office, see the photo below)
We should arrive at the starting point of the hike around 10:15.
Expected arrival time back at the Prague main station is 19:10. As always, a delay is possible. Don’t plan anything vital after the trip!
There is a restaurant and a kiosk on the top of Milešovka. Don’t expect a huge selection of food, but they do accept cards!
About 15 km/9 miles of hiking with a steep ascent to Milešovka (in total cca 600 meters/2000 ft of vertical gain). Manageable by healthy city-dwellers/office workers who are used to walking.
Comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen and/or a rain coat if rain is expected.
Windproof jacket – The peak of Milešovka is considered the windiest place in the Czech Republic!
