Hey Everyone!
Ever wanted to feel like walking in the mines of Moria from the Lord of the Rings? Then you have to join me on this excursion!
We’re going to visit the abandoned underground limestone mines in Cesky kras near the Karlstejn Castle. A part of the complex is the well-known Velka Amerika quarry.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Walk 3km in underground tunnels and learn about limestone mining in Cesky kras
- See Velka Amerika Quarry from a viewpoint you haven’t seen it from before
- Hike in the forests and meadows of the Cesky kras Natural Reserve.
Please note: This trip is not suitable for people suffering anxiety in enclosed underground spaces – claustrophobia. All participants will attend strictly at their own risk and will follow the guide’s instructions at all times!
LOGISTICS & PLAN OF THE DAY
We will meet at 8:50 am at at the Prague Main Train Station (in front of the ticket office on the lower ground floor, see the photo below).
Please allow extra time to get there – public transport is less frequent on Saturdays. Use the journey planner to plan your route.
1. After getting off the train, we’ll hike for about 5 km mainly in the forest to the entrance of the mines.
2. The Excursion takes about 90 – 120 minutes, depending on how curious you will be!
3. After the excursion: We will go to the Karlstejn village where we’ll have an early dinner/late lunch.
4. From the restaurant is another 30 min walk to catch our train. We should be back in Prague around 19:00 pm however, there are frequent delays on the train line between Prague and Beroun, so don’t plan anything important for after the trip.
DIFFICULTY: Medium
The route combines both marked and unmarked trails and is about 12 km long (+3 km in the Underground), including some steep ascents and uneven terrain.
LUNCH
Bring yourself a sandwich or packed lunch and water for a little picnic before the excursion. We will stop in a restaurant for hot meal, after the excursion around 16:00 (not included).
What to bring with you
Flashlight – it can be a mobile phone as long as its battery is able to last for the whole tour; Firm, non-slippery shoes; Warm sweater or overcoat – it is about 9°C in the underground all year round! Water and packed lunch / snacks.
Helmets for everyone will be provided.

Includes the guided tour of the mines, round-trip train fare and organization and planning.
Children < 16 accompanied by adult only 290 CZK! (create a separate order for them an enter ‘child16’ coupon code at the checkout)
Food&drink is not included.
