“Na svatého Jiří, vylézají hadi a štíři!”
“On Saint George’s Day, snakes and scorpions are on their way!”
– Czech proverb
Hey Discoverers!
This weekend we’re celebrating Saint George’s Day who is venerated in many countries around the world. I think this is a great time to go on a pilgrimage to the Rotunda of St. George on the top of the Czech national mountain Říp.
Hora Říp (Říp Mountain) is a solitary hill (455 m/1520 ft) raising from the lowlands of river Elbe, some 30 km/20 miles north of Prague.
According to the Czech nation’s founding myth, a legendary tribal chief, “Praotec Čech“, had led his people to the top of Říp. Having had found the land around „abundant in milk and honey“, he decided to take possession of this (empty) country.
There is a grain of truth in the legend: From the top of Říp, you can really see a large part of Bohemia. At least, when the visibility is good.
Around 12 km of hiking with a steep ascent to Říp.
9:20 am at the Masaryk Train Station / Masarykovo nádraží (in front of the departures board).
