The viewing tower Závist
Ahoj Discoverers!
This Netwalk will take you to the southernmost reaches of the city and a bit beyond as well.
We’re going to hike up the Hradiště hill, which was from 6th to 1st century BC the location of the largest Celtic oppidum (fortified settlement) in the area of the current Czech Republic and where perhaps as many as 10 thousand people lived and worked.
On the highest point of the hill stood “akropolis”, a temple where rituals were performed. Since 2021, there is a 32 meters high wooden viewing tower offering fantastic views far and wide.
There is little to see from the oppidum itself because after finishing the excavations, archaeologists have covered the site to protected it for future research.
But if you download the “Oppidum Závist” app you’ll see what the place looked like 2500 years ago on the screen of your phone. It is very cool, I recommend it!
Another 4 km easy walk through the woods will bring us to Dolní Břežany, an immaculate small town just outside of Prague. Since 2010’s two leading laser research institutions, Eli Beamlines and HiLASE, are based here which greatly increased the affluence of the town.
We should complete the route around 13:30 at a bus stop in Dolní Břežany where you can catch a bus to “Kačerov” metro C station (About 20 min ride, 14 CZK with Lítačka, not included).
I hope you’ll join me for lunch at Olivův pivovar, a family-owned microbrewery known for a great taste of its beers and modern European cuisine!
Feel free to bring your dog to the walk!
We will meet at 10:00 am at the Main Train Station / Hlavní nádraží in front of the ticket office on the lower ground floor.
Please allow extra time to get there – public transport is less frequent on Sundays. If you can not find the group, call me at +420 739 370 212.
We will travel within Prague city limits – you will only need Lítačka or a validated 30-minute ticket.
Around 7 km with a steep incline from the Vltava river to the Hradiště hill. About 200 meters of vertical gain, mostly on unpaved forest trails which might be muddy and slippery.
Comfortable walking shoes you don’t mind getting dirty. An umbrella or raincoat if rain is expected.
Water & snack.
