Fellow Discoverers!
You might ask, what the heck is „the Ridges“. A mountain ridge is „hřeben“ in Czech, plural „hřebeny“. The name Hřebeny refers to the section of Brdy Highlands between Prague – Zbraslav and the valley of river Litavka. Hřebeny = Ridges, voila!
We will meet at 2:00 pm at Prague Main Station (at our usual place in front of the ticket office, see the photo below)
Please allow extra time to get there – public transport is less frequent at weekends. I recommend to look up your connection on the journey planner.
The train journey takes about an hour and we will travel on a very picturesque line to Dobris. It first goes along the Vltava via Zbraslav to Vrane nad Vltavou, then across the river on an interesting steel bridge and on the other side climbs through the forest in the valley of Bojanovice Creek.
Our first stop after getting off the train, will be in the garden of the 65-rooms chateau in Mnisek pod Brdy (the town’s name literally means “a little monk under the Brdy :-).
We’ll take here a brief refreshment break and then set off uphill to Brdy/Hřebeny (the Ridges). A short, but steep ascent, will bring us to Skalka. It is a pilgrimage site, dating back to the late 1600’s (not to be confused with Skalka metro A station) with a recently renovated baroque church of St. Mary Magdalene.
From Skalka, we’ll follow marked and unmarked forest trails to the “Babka” viewing point 506 meters a.s.l. overlooking the Berounka valley. On a clear day you can easily see all the way to Beroun and to Prague!
Then, for the rest of the trip, we’ll go downhill, and this 11 km long hike will end at Revnice train station where we’ll catch a train back to Prague Main Station. Expected arrival is 9.00 pm.
