Hello Discoverers!
After a trip dedicated to Karel Čapek earlier this year, I would like to invite you to another literary walk.
We will hike in the Kersko Wood, a large forest about 30 km east of Prague, which is inseparably connected with Bohumil Hrabal, one of the most translated Czech authors of the 20th century.
Hrabal grew up in the nearby town of Nymburk where his step-father was a manager in the brewery. From 1966 to 1996 Hrabal owned a weekend cottage (chata) in Kersko and wrote here novels like I served the king of England, Too Loud a Solitude or a collection of short stories ‘Snowdrop Festival’ taking place in the Kersko area.
The Czech film director Jiri Menzel adapted several of his books into movies. One of them, ‘Closely Watched Trains‘ won the Oscar for the best foreign language film in 1968.
We will meet at 8:45 AM, Prague Masaryk Railway Station (Masarykovo nádraží), in the station hall, by the departures board.
The train ride to the starting point of the hike will take about an hour.
Apart from a lovely walk in the autumn forest, the main highlight of the hike will be the Hrabal’s former cottage, where he wrote some of his most important novels.
Around 2:00 pm we will have lunch in Hrabalova Hájenka which was made famous by the Menzel’s movie adaptation of the Hrabal’s book The Snowdrop Festival (Slavnosti sněženek). You can read a lovely review of the movie in The New York Times (from 1984) here.
After the lunch, we will take a bus to the Černý most metro B station. It should arrive there at 16:45.
As always, a delay is possible, so I recommend to plan some buffer time between this trip and your evening program.
About 12 km of hiking in the flat terrain of the Kersko Wood.
