Nothing cheers you up during short winter days like being physically active in the fresh air, seeing beautiful places and talking with friendly people!
For this trip, we will head to the northernmost part of the Czech Republic, the Šluknov promontory. Here, hidden in the deep forests of Bohemian Switzerland you will find a special winter spectacle – Brtnické ledopády!
Ledopády or icefalls (not exactly an accurate translation as icefalls form at glaciers) are not frozen waterfalls. They are rather formed by repeated freezing and melting of water on rocks. The water is often mixed with minerals which gives the icefalls a range of colours so they resemble the stactites and stalagmites of limestone caves.
While the Brtníky area is not the only place where colorful icicles and icefalls are formed, the Brtnické Icefalls are special for their impressive size and a large number of individual formations within a small area.
To see photos of the Brtnické icefalls from January 2019, go to the website of the local branch of the Club of Czech Tourist (KČT) in Krásná Lípa here.
Please note: Based on the experience from previous years, the icefalls are almost certain to be there around this time of the year. However, this is a very weather dependent phenomenon, which requires several cycles of freezing and melting to form.
While I can not 100% guarantee you will see the icefalls in their full glory, I can promise a fun active day out spend with friendly international people in lovely Bohemian Switzerland.
Please read attentively!
