Hello Discoverers!

Nothing cheers you up during short winter days like being physically active in the fresh air, seeing beautiful places and talking with friendly people!

For this trip, we will head to the northernmost part of the Czech Republic, the Šluknov promontory. Here, hidden in the deep forests of Bohemian Switzerland you will find a special winter spectacle – Brtnické ledopády!

Ledopády or icefalls (not exactly an accurate translation as icefalls form at glaciers) are not frozen waterfalls. They are rather formed by repeated freezing and melting of water on rocks. The water is often mixed with minerals which gives the icefalls a range of colours so they resemble the stactites and stalagmites of limestone caves.

While the Brtníky area is not the only place where colorful icicles and icefalls are formed, the Brtnické Icefalls are special for their impressive size and a large number of individual formations within a small area.

To see photos of the Brtnické icefalls from January 2019, go to the website of the local branch of the Club of Czech Tourist (KČT) in Krásná Lípa here.

Please note: Based on the experience from previous years, the icefalls are almost certain to be there around this time of the year. However, this is a very weather dependent phenomenon, which requires several cycles of freezing and melting to form.

While I can not 100% guarantee you will see the icefalls in their full glory, I can promise a fun active day out spend with friendly international people in lovely Bohemian Switzerland.

PLAN OF THE DAY & TRAIL DESCRIPTION

Please read attentively!

We will meet at 8:00 am on Saturday 25th of January 2020, in front of the old building of Prague Main Train Station (Fantova budova). See the photo of the meeting point below.

Please be on time because the bus won’t be able to park at the pick-up location for very long! Journey planner will help you to plan your morning travel.

  • The bus journey to the hike’s starting point takes about 2 hours and 15 minutes.
  • You can expect the hike itself will take about 4 hours, taking into account the icy trails and time for taking pictures.
  • After the hike, around 3:00 pm, we will have lunch in a nice local restaurant (not included) and then travel home.
  • Expected arrival back to Prague is 7:30 pm but a delay is possible. Don’t plan anything critical after the trip!

DIFFICULTY: Medium

9 km/6 miles long hike, about 260 meters / 850 ft of vertical gain

Please note Do not join this trip if you’re not comfortable walking on snowy and icy trails and stairs!
