I’d like to invite you for a special hike for all nature and history lovers!
We will enjoy the beauty of nature and reenact a part of the turbulent Czech history of the mid 20th century.
In the first few years after the 1948 communist putsch in Czechoslovakia, before the border became impenetrable, thousands of free-minded Czechoslovaks hiked across Šumava to emigrate from their homeland.
We are going to do the same – cross the border to the German Federal State of Bavaria which was 70 years ago under American administration.
To make it even more authentic, for the majority of the hike, we are going to follow “Channel 54” – the route used by Kilian Nowotny.
Kilian Nowotny was a Šumava native, trader, smuggler, and above all, man knowing the Šumava like nobody else. He was recruited by the US Army Intelligence Agency CIC to walk their agents across the border to Czechoslovakia. As a “side hustle” he did the same for political refugees heading in the opposite direction. He was nicknamed “the king of Šumava” for his outstanding knowledge of the forest along the Czech-Bavarian frontier and his ability to outsmart guards on both sides of the border.
PLAN OF THE DAY & TRAIL DESCRIPTION
Please read attentively!
We will meet at 8:00 am at the bus stop in front of Akcent Hotel, Stroupeznickeho 1, Praha 5 – Smichov. It is immediately outside of the metro B station Andel, exit Na Knizeci.
We will travel by a privately chartered bus. The journey to the trail head takes about 2 hours and 45 minutes.
FOOD
Bring at least 2 l of water and a packed lunch and snack to eat during the day! Due to the time constraints, there will be no restaurant lunch stop!
Expected arrival back to Prague is around 9:30 pm but a delay is possible. Don’t plan anything important after the trip!

About 14 km / 9 miles of hiking including rocky terrain and muddy trails
BRING WITH YOU
You will be going abroad so you have to have a Personal ID with you (Passport, EU country ID card). Given the recent release of travel restrictions I would recommend having on you a proof of your Czech residency as well.
Good walking shoes/boots. Dress in layers according to the weather forecast for the day. Bring some energy bars etc, and water. Euros to buy snacks and souvenirs. Packed lunch.
