Hello Discoverers,
let’s take advantage of the long weekend at the end of September and explore further from Prague!
We will head to one of the most beautiful places in the Czech Republic – the Podyjí/Thayatal National Park in south Moravia on the border with Austria.
The river Dyje, in Austria called Thaya, forms here a 42 km/26 miles long and up to 220 meters/720 ft deep canyon which hosts an amazing diversity of flora and fauna as well as a few medieval castles.
The Czech side of the river was for 40 years hidden behind the Iron Curtain and off-limits for everyone but border patrols.
After the end of the Cold War, the uniqueness of this area was immediately recognised and in 1991 the Podyjí National Park was declared. In 2000 the same status was given to the Austrian side of the Dyje river – Thayatal (The Thaya Valley) creating the Inter-National Park Podyjí/Thayatal.
Join a small group of max. 12 friendly people and explore this special place! Our base for exploring both National Parks will be Znojmo – a beautiful historic city in a picturesque setting above the Dyje River.
ITINERARY
Day 1 – Saturday 26th September
Travelling from Prague and sightseeing in Znojmo
Meeting at the Florenc Central Bus Station at 7:30 am.
We should arrive in Znojmo at 11:00. We’ll drop our bags in the pension and have lunch in a nice local restaurant (not included). After the refreshment we will do a walk around the main sights of Znojmo.
Day 2 – Sunday 27th September
18 km hike across the former Iron Curtain to the smallest town in Austria and to the charming Vranov nad Dyjí
Day 3 – Monday 28th September
15 km scenic hike along Dyje, Travel back to Prague
We should be back in Prague around 19:30 on Monday night.
As always, a delay is possible.
DIFFICULTY: MEDIUM
(Good health and physical fitness is necessary)
Altogether around 40 km of walking in the hilly terrain of Podyjí and Thayatal.
ACCOMMODATION
A lovely pension (B&B) in the historic centre of Znojmo. We’ll have rooms for two, each two rooms sharing one bathroom. The accommodation includes breakfast. Bedding and towels will be provided.
PRICE
2390 CZK or 2190 CZK with Discovery Pass
The price includes round-trip bus ticket from Prague to Znojmo, local buses in Podyjí, two night accommodation with breakfast in a B&B in the historic centre of Znojmo, travel agency insurance and photos from the trip.
