We will meet on Saturday July 14th at 8:40 AM, at the bus station “Cerny most” – outside of metro B terminus of the same name. Walk out of the metro and take stairs down. The meeting point is outside of a big yellow RegioJet bus heading for Liberec.
The bus journey to the center of Liberec takes just over an hour. We’ll change here for a tram and after 20 min get off at the highest tram stop in the Czech Republic (!) right under the Mt. Jested. The hike from the tram terminus to the peak is only about 3,5 km long but relatively steep, overcoming almost 500 meters of vertical gain.
Mt Ještěd is with 1012 meters/3320 ft a.s.l. the highest peak of the Jested – Kozakov Ridge. It got remarkably well known around 1970, when on the top was erected an architectural gem of TV tower, which became the landmark of the whole region.
The view from the top is breath-taking. You’ll see much of Bohemia as well as parts of Poland and Germany! Bear in mind that the mountain peak tends to be considerably colder and windier than the valley below. Bring a light windproof jacket or a fleece.
After a light refreshment break (kiosk food like hot dog, etc, or a soup in the hotel restaurant), we’ll pick up the scooters and set off on a 12 km/7.5 miles long downhill ride! The ride should take us 60-90 minutes, depending on how much we stop to take pictures and enjoy the scenery.
Krystofovo Valley is a lovely old village declared a conservation area for its picturesque timber framed cottages. It also boasts the only village “orloj” astronomical clock in the country and a historical railway viaduct.
After returning the scooters, we’ll go for a late lunch in one of the valley’s restaurants and then for a short sightseeing walk around the village.
A 20 minutes train ride will bring us back to Liberec, where we’ll change for a RegioJet bus to Prague. Expected return back to Cerny most is 7:05 pm.
Easy to Medium: 3,5 km hike with 480 m elevation followed by 12 km of downhill scooter ride (not too steep – on average some 5-10% incline)
Good walking shoes, light windproof jacket or a fleece for the peak of Mt. Jested, water and a small snack, sunglasses, sunscreen and (optional) cycling gloves for the scooter ride.
