Hey Discoverers,
you are invited to a special Christmas experience!
We will head to Annaberg-Buchholz, a lovely historic town of about 20 thousand inhabitants on the German side of Krušné hory (Ore Mountains), about a 2 hour drive from Prague.
Every year, there is a very charming Christmas market with local handcrafted goods and food. It’s a perfect place to buy some unique Christmas presents and get in the mood for the most wonderful time of the year!
The city is situated at 600 meters above the sea, so there is a good chance of having snow for a real Christmas atmosphere!
But Annaberg-Buchholz is not just about the Christmas market, it is also a very picturesque place, with many notable buildings, churches and interesting sights to visit.
Just this year, the whole area was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites as “Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří Mining Region” with 17 sites in Germany and 5 in Czechia. (1)
Interesting fact: Do you know where the name “dollar” came from?
In 1520, a mint was established in the newly founded city of Jáchymov (Joachimsthal) on the Czech side of the Ore Mountains. The so called “Joachimsthalers” or just “Thalers” for short were minted there in vast quantities and served for several centuries as a standard for the monetary systems in many European countries. Their name still survives as “dollar.” (2,3)
Pretty cool, huh?

We will meet at 8:00 am on Saturday December 14th in front of the old building of Prague Main Train Station (Fantova budova). See the photo of the meeting point below.
We will travel by a privately chartered small bus. The journey takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes including a stop at a service station.
After arriving in Annaberg-Buchholz, we will go together on an (optional) walking tour of the town. Afterwards, you will be free to explore and enjoy the Christmas market on your own.
Not to worry if you’re going to come by yourself. We are going to arrange meetups during the day where you will be able to reconnect with other members of the group.
Expected return to Prague: 9:00 PM
As always, a delay is possible. Don’t plan anything important for after the trip!
Dress according to the weather forecast. You will spend most of the day outdoors. You need to have a passport or EU identity card with you! Bring Euros, otherwise you will have to withdraw from a cash machine in Annaberg.
