Hey Discoverers!
Říp is a solitary hill (455 m/1520 ft) raising from the lowlands of river Elbe, some 30 km/20 miles north of Prague.
According to the Czech nation’s founding myth, a mythical tribal chief, “Forefather Czech“, led his people to the top of Říp mountain. Having ascertained the land around „abundant in milk and honey“, he decided to take possession of this (empty) country.
There is a grain of truth in the legend: From the top of Říp, you can really see a large part of Bohemia. At least, when the visibility is good.
LOGISTICS
We will meet at 8:30 AM at the Main Train Station of Prague (metro C – Hlavní nádraží) at our usual spot in front of the main ticket office, see the photo below:
In less than an hour, we will arrive in Roudnice nad Labem. We will take a walk around the town and learn about its history and main sights.
The hike around small villages to the Říp mountain will take us about 2 hrs (6 km/4 miles). Under the mountain, we will stop by the local Fair of St. George (patron of the church on the top whose feast is on April 24). There will be some attractions for children and possibility to buy a snack, drink or cotton candy.
Then we will hike up the mountain. On the top, we will have a refreshment in a kiosk (only serves drinks, fried food and hot dogs), see the small church of St. George from 12th century (admission included) and enjoy the beautiful vistas of the countryside around.
Walking down the hill to the train stop below the mountain (another 3 km/2 miles) will be a breeze. And, we should still have plenty of time for a glass or two of craft beer in the local microbrewery!
For the journey back, you’ll have two options:
- To take a regular train (fare is included, one change, arrives at Prague Masaryk station at 18:21)
- To take a special historical steam train (you’ll need to pay additional 200 СZK, direct train, arrives at Prague Main Station at 18:18).
You will be prompted to select your preferred option when reserving your place.

Good hiking shoes, raincoat, water and snack and of course, good mood!
