Hello Discoverers!
Let’s take advantage of the free day on 1st of May and go on an evening walk topped with the Walpurgis Night celebration (AKA burning of the Witches or “pálení čarodějnic”).
This ancient tradition is very popular in the Czech Republic and many other European countries.
On the eve of the 1st of May people gather around large bonfires outside of villages. The roots of this custom come from pagan celebration of spring and exorcism of evil spirits later influenced by the Inquisition.
This year, we will go to the town of Řevnice which holds a record for the highest witches bonfire in the Czech Republic!
We will meet in the departure hall of Smíchovské nádraží (Prague – Smíchov train station) at 17:10 on Wednesday afternoon
A photo of the meeting point is below.
Don’t be late our train leaves at 17:33!
A 25-minute train journey will take us to the small town of Dobřichovice on the Berounka river south-west of Prague.
We will walk some 8 km along the river and around 20:00 join locals at the bonfire. There will be stands where you can buy refreshments. The bonfire will be set at 21:00.
You can stay as long as you want, the celebration takes place about 30-min walk from the Řevnice train station with frequent trains to both Prague Smíchov and Hlavní stations.
There is a train every 30 minutes until 23:33. You can buy the ticket from the conductor on the train for about 70 CZK or less with the Prague Lítačka Card.
The last train arrives at the Prague Main Station at 0:09.
Around 8 km with cca 100 meters of vertical gain, partly on unpaved trails.
Comfortable walking shoes, warm jumper or overcoat (it’ll be cold after sunset), optional – camping mat or something similar to sit on.
