Visit the best preserved Jewish Quarter in Europe, learn about the Jewish customs and traditions and admire the stunning St. Procopius’ Basilica!
More info in the event’s description
I would like to invite you to an informative and sightseeing trip to the only Jewish UNESCO heritage site outside of Israel!
Třebíč is a picturesque town in the Vysočina region, roughly halfway between Prague and Vienna and the only place in Europe with a perfectly preserved Jewish quarter.
Walking through its narrow alleyways and quirky passages will give you a feel of what Prague’s Jewish Quarter must have been like before it was demolished at the turn of 19th and 20th century.
The second UNESCO site in Třebíč is the beautiful and architecturally unique basilica of St. Procopius.
If a picture is worth a thousand words, then how many is a video worth? Check out the two short videos about Třebíč I selected for you on YouTube.
An older but very informative video from the UNESCO YouTube channel (btw. most houses in the Jewish Quarter have been since renovated and look much nicer).
And a newer, flashier video from the Visit Czech Republic YouTube channel
Please read attentively!
We will meet at 8:00 am on Wednesday 1st of May 2019, in front of the old building of the Prague Main Train Station (Fantova budova). See the photo of the meeting point below.
We will travel by a privately chartered small bus. The journey to Třebíč takes about 2 hours and 15 minutes.
First, we will go on a guided tour of the Jewish quarter with stops at various points of interest. You will see the interior of the Rear Synagogue and of the house of Seligman Bauer. The house is authentically furnished to represent the typical housing of an average Jewish household during the interwar period.
The tour takes about 90 minutes and then we will go on a short walk to the Jewish cemetery and to a viewing point overlooking Třebíč.
Around 13:30 we will have lunch (see below).
After lunch you’ll have roughly an hour to walk around the town on your own.
At 16:00 we will meet in front of the Basilica of St. Procopius for a 45-minute guided tour of the church.
You can expect to be back in Prague around 8:00 pm but as always, a delay is possible. Don’t plan anything important after the trip!
We will have lunch in the restaurant and artisan brewery Urban (not included).
(Around 4 km of walking with stairs and uneven terrain)
Wear comfortable walking shoes – you will walk on cobbled stones a lot!
An umbrella or rain coat if rain is expected. Lunch is reserved from 1:30 pm, so you will need to bring a snack/sandwich and a bottle of water.
